Spinning Wheels

[vimeo id="147467740"] One of the most depressing things for a leader is to feel like you’re not moving. You’re always busy. You’re always keeping your eye on the time. And you feel like you’re doing a lot…but not accomplishing much. It’s like getting your car stuck in mud. You can floor the accelerator as hard as you want…but the car isn’t going to move. So how does a leader get out of this rut? Well here are a few steps to get you started.

The first thing is to refocus. You know, we often stall because we don’t know where we want to go. Growth is impossible without vision. So ask yourself some questions. What are your main goals in life? What are the three most important things to you? Where do you see yourself in five years? Write down your answers to these questions. Then envision what success looks like and write down as many details as you can. Your vision should match with your goals. If it doesn’t, go back through the process again until they do. You see, life’s direction is at the intersection of your goals and your dreams. The clearer they intersect – the clearer your direction.

The second thing is to re-plan. Many times we feel like we’re spinning our wheels because we’re not going in the direction we want to be. So when you know your direction, you need to plan how you’re going to follow it. Start by writing down three things you can do that would have the greatest impact on your life’s direction. What obstacles are keeping you from doing those things? Maybe there are some less-important activities you need to quit so you can invest more time into what really matters to you. Focus on those three things you wrote down and strategize how you can being incorporating them into your lifestyle.

The last thing is to re-engage. You know, sometimes the hardest thing to do when you’ve been stuck for a while is to put your foot back on the accelerator. There’s a lot of discouragement you have to overcome. Maybe you’ve tried to get out of the rut before and it hasn’t worked. But if you re-focus and strategize first, taking that first step can be the catalyst for life-transformation!
