[vimeo id="130362715"] You know, I constantly find myself wishing I had more time. If only I had an extra day to spend at home with my family. If only I had a few more hours to sleep at night. But I’ve come to realize that time-restraints may actually be a good thing. They really force me to steward myself and what I spend my life doing.
In my book, 9 Disciplines of Enduring Leadership, I share about the importance of self-management. You see, once time is spent, it can never be reclaimed. So what you invest it into makes a big difference. If you are always investing time into entertainment, you’ll probably struggle to achieve much. On the other hand, if you are solely career-focused, you’ll be very prone to burn-out. The key to long-term success is life balance, and that takes self-management. So here are three areas in our lives that we need to manage.
First, we need to learn how to manage ourselves. Now, most of us know the importance of managing our physical bodies, so we don’t really need to get into a philosophical discussion about the importance of exercise and diet. But self-management also requires inner control to develop integrity, conscientiousness, and trustworthiness. These characteristics make others want to follow you. When you have integrity, followers will forgive your mistakes and look for ways to contribute to the overall success of the team.
Secondly, we need to learn how to manage our emotional health. Emotions are one of the most difficult things to control. Managing them is, therefore, one of the most important tasks for a leader. Few things undermine a leader as much as an emotional outburst or nervous breakdown. So take some time and jot down a few “trigger points” for your emotions and how you can prepare to react calmly the next time you encounter one of those triggers.
Lastly, we need to learn how to manage our spiritual relationship. How you manage your spiritual life is important because it connects to your Divine Design. Much like your physical health, your spiritual health requires daily attention. Going to church weekly is a good idea, but it isn’t enough to sustain you any more than exercising once a week keeps you in shape. Consider adding Bible reading, prayer, and conversations with fellow believers to your daily life.
